Hutan Kencana Group was established in 2021 to support ecosystem restoration efforts, protect biodiversity, and improve the wellbeing of communities around forests. The company creates innovative approaches to protect forests, biodiversity, and provide alternative livelihoods to local communities.  Hutan Kencana Group partners with Syngenera, have formed a Joint Venture called Hutan Synergy. Hutan Synergy leads the sales and marketing for a pipeline of forestry carbon projects in Southeast Asia.

As we expand our biochar portfolio, we are seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join us as Biochar Project Lead 

 

Roles and Responsibilities 

This role will oversee the end-to-end development of biochar projects while managing cross-functional teams and stakeholder relationships. The ideal candidate combines technical knowledge of biochar production with team leadership and carbon market knowledge to help scale our biochar portfolio. 

The key responsibilities under this position are:

Biochar Project Oversight

  • Lead and oversee the development and execution of biochar project development.
  • Guide and manage relationships with feedstock suppliers, off-take partners, and local communities.
  • Evaluate biochar production technologies and select optimal systems for biochar applications.
  • Oversee feedstock sourcing strategies and supply chain development.
  • Ensure biochar quality meets carbon standard requirements and end-use specifications.
  • Represent the team in conferences, technical meetings, and client presentations.
  • Engage and provide necessary updates to internal leadership, field partners, communities, and government entities.
  • Recruit and prepare technical teams for future operational phases.

Pilot Project Management

  • Design and manage end-to-end execution of a biochar pilot project.
  • Coordinate with engineers, agronomists, and technology providers for setup and monitoring.
  • Collect field data to validate business and carbon models.
  • Lead methodology selection (e.g., Verra VM0044, Puro.Earth, etc.) tailored to the project’s context.
  • Develop carbon project documentation (PD, MRV plan, baseline assessments).
  • Liaise with consultants and validation/verification bodies (VVBs).

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Renewable Energy, Agricultural Engineering, Forestry, Environmental Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience managing technical or sustainability-related projects, ideally in biochar, biomass, waste-to-energy, or land-based carbon initiatives.
  • Hands-on experience with biochar projects (preferably with rice husk experience), or biomass thermal conversion technologies.
  • Solid understanding of carbon project development, particularly in the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) and familiarity with methodologies from Verra VCS, Puro.Earth, Gold Standard, or other crediting programs.
  • Ability to support feasibility assessments and lead the piloting of small-scale projects and technologies.
  • Familiarity with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies.
  • Excellent project planning, documentation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, managing complex projects, and delivering high-impact results.
  • Strong analytical and technical writing skills.
  • Demonstrated professional-level fluency in English and Bahasa Indonesia is required.
  • Ability to travel to project sites, as required.
