Indonesia’s population is 253,609,643 with youth making up approximately 43 million or 17.1% of this figure. Youth unemployment presents a major challenge for Indonesia. Indonesian youth often do not possess strong educational backgrounds. 50% of the Indonesian population has an elementary school education, 40% have graduated from junior or senior high school, and only 10% possess a college or university degree. Some of the major challenges facing Indonesian youth, in particular young women, are:
• Limited access to education (schooling often comes at a high cost, transportation, accommodation, school supplies, and in many cases school fees);
• Limited household economic resources often force children in poor families, most often girls, to leave school early and begin working to help their families;
• Quality and relevance of education do not meet job market standards;
• Graduates of local vocational schools and universities often lack the skills to effectively enter the workforce;
• Women are adversely affected in emergencies and are often unprepared and lack resilience when faced with financial crises and natural disasters;
Girls and young women often lack self-confidence and rely on their male guardians, usually their fathers, older brothers or husbands, for approval of decisions that affect their future development, resilience, and empowerment, including economic empowerment.
