USAID KUAT

Project Overview:

The USAID KUAT (Komunitas Perkotaan Untuk Aksi Tangguh) project aims to enhance disaster risk reduction and resilience within urban communities in Indonesia, with a specific focus on Greater Jakarta. Indonesia is highly susceptible to natural disasters, and the country’s recurrent post-disaster reconstruction expenses underline the urgency of comprehensive disaster risk reduction efforts. The USAID KUAT project recognizes the need to build broader resilience by engaging communities, government bodies, the private sector, and civil society in collaborative actions.

The central goal of the USAID KUAT project is to decrease the impact of natural disasters and associated economic disruptions in Greater Jakarta. This will be achieved through several key objectives:

  • Enhancing disaster risk awareness and preparedness at the household and community levels in high risk urban and peri urban villages.
  • Strengthening the capacity and coordinated engagement of public and private sector actors as essential partners in disaster risk reduction and resilience in Indonesia

The USAID KUAT project strategically engages a diverse range of stakeholders across Greater Jakarta. The focus is on enhancing risk awareness and knowledge sharing to bolster community disaster risk reduction capacity. Additionally, the project implements a ‘Whole of Settlements’ Approach, targeting multi-hazard risk reduction in selected urban and peri-urban villages. The project aligns with USAID/BHA’s disaster risk reduction framework, which emphasizes proactive engagement, capacity building, and innovation across various sectors.

The anticipated impact of the USAID KUAT project includes:

  • Strengthening the ability of various stakeholders to recover from disasters
  • Increased involvement of multiple actors, including government, private sector and civil society in effective disaster management
  • Improved availability of data for informed decision – making related to disaster risk
  • Sharing of practical tools and frameworks among stakeholders to support disaster preparedness, information exchange and learning
