The Nature Conservancy is a conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. We currently have a job opening for:

 

MARINE PROGRAM DIRECTOR

 

The Marine Program Director oversees all aspects of marine management, policy, science, communications and site-based conservation
for the Indonesia Program.  In close coordination with the Country, s/he serves as the principle contact for marine issues with government agencies, other conservation organizations (local, national and international), international TNC marine staff, public
and private funders.  The Marine Program Director provides program leadership and is responsible for establishing overall conservation priorities, guiding and supporting the Indonesia Program’s marine conservation planning work, including eco-regional and
conservation area planning, leading and managing a marine team which supports and improves conservation management, building strategic, scientific and technical capacity in the field and establishing TNC Indonesia Program as a major marine conservation partner
in the region.  S/he is also responsible for developing key partnerships with public and private organizations to identify and resolve management and policy issues; negotiating complex and innovative solutions with government agencies to conserve and protect
important marine areas and developing and implementing marine conservation strategies, including the development of a resilient network of marine protected areas.  S/he disseminates best practices, provides training and analyses to best implement organizational
measures of success.

 

Duties include:

 

Conservation Science

·         
Establishes TNC Indonesia Program as a major conservation partner within the area of responsibility

·         
Defines conservation priorities and builds strategic, scientific and technical capacity in the field

·         
Develops innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools, and frameworks to address the natural system needs

·         
Ensures that science-based tools, models and knowledge are leveraged and adopted by strategic stakeholders

·         
Develops and implements cutting edge conservation strategies in a high profile geography and major philanthropic market

·         
Implements marine spatial planning to guide development activities/investment that integrates biodiversity conservation – socioeconomic/development interests

·         
Establishes 4 different models of Marine Protected Area that demonstrate at least one level of increase in the Indonesia’s management effectiveness rating (EKKP3K).

·         
Implements pilot project on Climate & Disaster Risk Reduction (CDRR) and on advocating for large-scale marine spatial plans produced to guide development in
the region (Development by Design).

·         
Leads and manages a large team which implements conservation efforts

 

Linking Science-Policy-Practice

·         
Establishes corporate partnerships where the Marine Program delivers the strategic technical advisory role to promote sustainable marine resources management.

·         
Develops key partnerships with public and private organizations in order to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best
practices

·         
Negotiates complex and innovative solutions with government agencies, major institutions, and landowners to conserve and protect natural communities

 

Robust Measuring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) System Development

·         
In close coordination with the Strategic Conservation and Development team, develops an MRV system for the Marine Program which will improve policy implementation
and ensure environmental integrity and accountability

 

Strategic Development

·         
Plays a leading role in managing major public agency and elected official relationships

·         
Plays a leading role in public and private fundraising programs of the program

·         
Engages local community and key influential support for local, regional, and global conservation efforts

·         
Develops and implements strategies for the cultivation and solicitation of major gift prospects, including corporate, foundation, institutions, and/or individual
donors.

·         
Works closely with development team to determine effective strategies for identified donors and prospects, specifically for the Marine Program.  

·         
Network with related TNC staff within Asia Pacific region and WO.

 

The Marine Program Director reports to the Country Director and is based in Jakarta.

 

Requirements:

·         
BA/BS degree in marine protected area/tropical coastal management and 12 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and
experience.

·         
Fundraising experience, including identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation.

·         
Experience designing, implementing, and directing complex or multiple projects of strategic importance, including managing finances, supervising multidisciplinary
professionals and coordinating the work of partners while meeting deadlines.  

·         
Experience working with current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and regions.

·         
Experience in partnership development (partners, community, government, etc.); experience with high-level conservation contacts.

·         
Experience working with methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives.

·         
Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.

·         
Networking skills with high level conservation contacts.

·         
Experience conceiving and implementing strategic and creative initiatives.

·         
Negotiation skills.
