Gender and Youth Officer
To start as soon as possible: September 2024, we are seeking an enthusiastic, experienced and dedicated candidate in a position as
Gender and Youth Officer
S/he will be based in OKU Selatan District, Sumatra Selatan. S/he will work within a team of 24 other staff currently working with about 15,000 farming families and 600 farmer groups in Sumatra Selatan. The Gender and Youth Officer will be responsible for implementing and supporting gender and youth-focused initiatives within HRNS’s agricultural programs. The successful candidate will work closely with smallholder families to promote gender equality and empower young people to take active roles in their communities. The role requires a strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities in rural areas, particularly in the context of coffee production.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Gender Equality Initiatives
- Promote gender equality by ensuring that both men and women have equal opportunities and responsibilities within smallholder farming families.
- Facilitate workshops and training sessions on gender equality, financial literacy, and improved farm management tailored to the needs of rural women and men.
- Collaborate with local farmer groups to integrate gender-sensitive approaches into agricultural practices, enhancing perceived value and active participation in farmer organizations.
- Monitor and report on gender-related outcomes and impacts, identifying areas for improvement.
Youth Empowerment
- Develop and implement programs that provide attractive opportunities for youth in rural coffee-growing areas.
- Support young people in developing a clear vision for their future and the steps necessary to achieve it, fostering their roles as successful businesspeople and community leaders.
- Encourage youth participation in the decision-making processes within their communities and farming operations.
- Work closely with educational institutions, local governments, and other stakeholders to create structured processes for generational change in coffee communities.
Community Engagement
- Engage with smallholder families to improve income, food security, and overall farm management practices through tailored gender and youth programs.
- Serve as a role model in promoting gender equality and youth empowerment, demonstrating the benefits of these approaches to rural development.
- Liaise with local and international partners to align HRNS’s gender and youth strategies with broader development goals.
Required profile:
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in gender, youth empowerment, or community development, preferably within an agricultural context.
- Strong knowledge of gender equality principles and youth development frameworks.
- Proven track record of working with rural communities, particularly with smallholder families and farmer organizations.
- Ability to design and implement training and capacity-building activities for diverse audiences.
- Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia; proficiency in English is an advantage.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
- Willingness to travel regularly to rural areas and work directly with smallholder farmers and youth.
- Candidates who are domiciled and/or from the Oku Selatan area and other surrounding regencies will be prioritized.
- Ability to drive a heavy motorbike and manual-transmission car.
