National Forestry Data Analyst (Individual Consultant/Consultancy Opportunity)
General Context
PUR is an impact company that regenerates ecosystems within corporate value chains and
beyond. We specialize in advancing our clients’ climate strategies, while building resilient
supply chains through strong local partnerships. As an industry-leading project developer,
PUR has implemented nature-based solutions since 2008 across 30 countries—planting more
than 33 million trees through agroforestry, regenerative agriculture, reforestation, forest
conservation and marine restoration. We ensure alignment with major global accounting
frameworks, informing clients on how to secure concrete impact by accurately measuring the
outcomes of field interventions.
Working collaboratively with clients on more than 40 global projects, PUR helps companies
address their Scope 3 emissions within their value chains, while increasing the resilience of
their farming partners. Our experts estimate, measure and verify carbon sequestration,
enabling companies to track progress against their science-based reduction targets, in line
with the Paris Agreement. We also support clients willing to contribute beyond their value
chain, producing carbon assets available as complementary credits beyond reduction and
removal efforts. Our projects also offer many co-benefits beyond carbon sequestration, such
as biodiversity enhancement, water preservation, soil fertility and livelihood improvement—
allowing clients to make a positive contribution to nature and local communities by investing in
ecosystem restoration.
Project Description
In Indonesia, PUR is currently implementing multiple agroforestry projects. PUR has partnered
with local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community groups to provide free
seedlings, alongside technical support and training, to local producers working in the coffee
supply chain.
On behalf of our client, PUR will oversee the overall design and management of all agroforestry
and forestry components, including project definition, reporting, certification, and coordination
of all activities related to tree planting. This includes providing technical assistance to
community groups, conducting workshops, training sessions, capability development, and
monitoring activities. Recognizing the significant carbon sequestration potential of agroforestry
interventions, PUR intends to improve its understanding, analysis and forecasting of carbon
impact of its different carbon project in Indonesia.
As one of the countries with the largest forest and highest biodiversity in the world, Indonesia
plays a crucial role in global conservation. Based on the data from Directorate General of
Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation, Ministry of Environment and Forestry (2022)
the total number of species in Indonesia are 15.336 species, including 10.629 animal species
and 4.705 tree species. Recognizing the immense significance of biodiversity, PUR is
dedicated to its preservation and endeavors to contribute to this cause. With this in mind, PUR
is seeking the expertise of a consultant to assist in the development of comprehensive
biodiversity databases in Indonesia. Currently, PUR has amassed a collection of over 100
distinct species within the country’s borders.
Scope of the consultancy
1/ Developing a carbon species database in Indonesia
The expected output under this assignment is to collate and analyze the data and develop a
database and guidelines for the biomass growth and carbon sequestration of the main tree
species planted by PUR in Indonesia over different geographies and contexts. The scope of
works od consultancy shall include but not necessarily be limited to following tasks:
- Literature Reviews (Desk Review): The consultant will undertake a desk and
literature review on tree species used in Indonesia by using the primary and
secondary data. The consultant should summarize the gathered data based on
specified categories, focusing on the carbon attributes of tree species, biomass
growth and capacity, as well as geographical and ecological information.
A defined prioritized list of species will be provided. If no data is available at the
species level, species would be categorized, by functional group, family - Data collection and analysis:
Data Organization: Organize collected data into a pre-made Microsoft Excel
spreadsheet, with all variable definitions and references provided.
Data Curation: Collect all necessary references from which data was obtained and
ensure that these data sources can be accessed by the teams at PUR - Ensuring stakeholder participations: Develop partnerships with numerous
research institutes, universities, project developers, to collect the required carbon
data.
