WRI Indonesia invites research proposals focusing on Market Prospects, Value Chains, and Emerging Market Players for Non-Timber Forest Products in West Sumatra

Scope of research:

  1. Market Analysis: Assess supply-demand dynamics, this includes
    market size, trends, and consumer preferences for NTFPs originating from West Sumatra.
  2. Value Chain Analysis for Niche Market Product: Analyzing the existing value chain of NTFP
    commodities within West Sumatra, while taking into account the impact of various product
    development.
  3. Stakeholder Mapping: Identify emerging market players in the NTFP value and supply chain to foster business partnerships among forest-dependent communities and business stakeholders.
  4. Policy Assessment: Evaluate current policies concerning NTFPs to uncover policy gaps in NTFP market development, including exploring diverse funding schemes for related institutional development, whether within governmental bodies (such as the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, local governments, Environmental Funds Management Agency) or other entities.

Job Requirements

  1. Possessing skills and knowledge of basic market research.
  2. Proven experience in analyzing market trends to identify growth opportunities for NTFP
    commodities, utilizing historical data and emerging market trends.
  3. Ability to identify differentiation and niche market opportunities for each selected commodity.
  4. Have expertise and experience in community-based small-scale enterprise development and NTFPs, especially in West Sumatra, with a good record of performance and integrity within the past 5 years.
  5. Proficiency in assessing existing value chain channels and exploring optimization or creation of new channels of the selected commodities.
  6. Capacity to consider seasonal variations in supply and demand for the commodities if relevant.
  7. Familiarity with regulatory environments affecting commodity production and distribution, including certifications and standards impacting market access and consumer preference.
  8. Proven experience, involvement, or at least awareness of emerging issues in policy development at the national and sub-national levels, particularly regarding policies related to Social Forestry (‘Perhutanan Sosial’) and Integrated Area Development, will be considered a significant advantage.
  9. A minimum of 5 years of proven experience in the same project on measuring supply and demand dynamics for potential NTFP commodities, including identifying suppliers, market trends, and consumer preferences.
  10. Domiciled and have valid legality and business licenses following regulations in Indonesia
  11. Preferably based or have a representative that is based in West Sumatera, but not compulsory
