SENIOR AGRONOMIST
S/he will be based in Muaradua or Simpang Sender, OKU Selatan District, Sumatra Selatan. S/he will work within a team of 24 other staff currently working with about 15,000 farming families and 600 farmer groups in Sumatra Selatan.
Main Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Lead the agricultural related program activities that are focused on farmers producing coffee, towards increased diversification, intercropping and agroforestry. 2. Work towards organic and regenerative farming practices: the use of organic inputs, decreasing of synthetic agrochemical usage and other actions towards improving productivity in an ecological sustainable manner. 3. Identify and keep an inventory of challenges on the farm and respective innovations that can improve the systems and practices being used by farmers across the target area. 4. Design & implement various interventions that are affordable and understandable for farmers to implement in their farming areas. Perform Cost-Benefit analysis i.e. return of investment of the innovations and new practices. 5. Work together with the HRNS Indonesian team, supporting the field team to integrate learnings into their extension & training activities and with local farmers, farmer groups and cooperatives, department of agriculture and other public and private sector stakeholders, universities, etc. 6. Oversee and improve the agroforestry nursery program for coffee and a large variety of tree and plant species for farm and forest. 7. Play a supporting role in the development of new initiatives related to forest protection, promotion of agroforestry systems and ensuring non-deforestation supply chains. Utilize online monitoring systems to steer the program. 8. Participate in the identification and promotion of forest garden products: such as spices, nuts, mushrooms, and other unique species that may bring potential economic benefit if managed or grown sustainably.
Required profile: – At least 5 years of experience in agroforestry, organic, regenerative agriculture and/or nature conservation programs with a good knowledge of agricultural supply chains. – Experience in agriculture-based program implementing agroforestry, preferably with coffee, cacao, pepper or other similar commodities. – Knowledge of organic composting, organic/integrated pest management are clear advantages. – Good understanding of climate change-related challenges faced by the smallholder agricultural sector. – A proven track record of working in rural communities with farmer groups and/or cooperatives. – Ability to act as a team player, but also to take the lead and build the capacity of the Field Officer team in knowledge of organic practices, soil management and agroforestry. – Knowledge of the Indonesian laws and regulations surrounding Social Forestry. – Reliable, diligent, well-organized and focussed on achieving results. – Willing to travel to farm and village locations on a regular basis. – Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia and English required.
