Request for Proposal: Short Film on Analog Forestry in BBS Initiative Program

Title

Production of Short Film Showcasing the Viability of Analog Forestry for Small-Scale Farmers in the Bukit Barisan Selatan (BBS) Initiative Program.

Background

HRNS Indonesia is implementing an Analog Forestry intervention in the buffer zones of Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park. This initiative promotes sustainable, multi-strata farming models that improve smallholder farmer resilience, diversify income sources, and support conservation efforts. The film will serve to visually communicate how this model works, how it is being implemented, and the tangible benefits observed by participating farmers.

Objective of the Film

To visually demonstrate how the Analog Forestry model is:

  • Feasible and adoptable by smallholder farmers
  • Economically beneficial, showing income profiles across crop layers and seasons
  • Ecologically impactful, contributing to biodiversity and climate resilience
  • To develop a promotional video or short film that highlights the BBS Initiative Project:
  • to enhance visibility and public engagement, particularly among external stakeholders, including donors, partners, and the wider community.
  • a strategic communication tool to showcase the project’s impact, approach, and relevance. It is expected to reflect the values and mission of HRNS Indonesia, while presenting the initiative in a compelling and professional manner.

  • NGOs and partners in agroecology and conservation
  • General public via social media and events

Film Output

  • 2 main video with duration of 15 to 25 minutes each
  • 9 short reels (1–2 minutes each) for social media
  • Raw footage and photos for HRNS documentation

Scope of Work and Film Structure

Pre-Production

Consultant Responsibilities:

  • Participate in content alignment meetings with HRNS team
  • Develop a detailed storyboard with scenes, interviews, and transitions
  • Finalize script/narrative voiceover (Indonesian + English)
  • Identify needed equipment and resources
  • Coordinate logistics with HRNS for community participation and travel

HRNS provides:

  • List of locations, farmer groups, and contact persons
  • Access to analog forestry farms and field schools
  • Facilitator for field interviews and discussions

During Production

Filming Content Outline (4 Parts):

Part 1 – Introduction & Context (Problem Statement)

  • Aerial and ground shots of BBS buffer zone: contrast between forest and degraded areas
  • Interviews with farmers: coffee monoculture, climate challenges, lean seasons
  • Message: Need for a new model that balances livelihood and landscape

Part 2 – Analog Forestry in Practice

  • Scenes of socialization and field school sessions
  • Mapping of existing crops by layers (1 to 4)
  • Farmer interviews: income gaps, lean season management
  • Group discussion: understanding stratification, concerns, testimonials
  • Farm sketch activity: personalized enrichment plan

Part 3 – Results: The Analog Forest

  • Drone and walk-through footage of farms at different maturity levels
  • Highlight visible 4-layer structure and biodiversity
  • Farmers describe observed ecological and economic impacts

Part 4 – Conclusion & Call to Action

  • Aerial visuals with voiceover (or animated caption): “from degraded to designed”
  • Message: Analog Forestry is a path to conservation and prosperity
  • HRNS contact and invitation for collaboration

Post-Production

Consultant Responsibilities:

  • Video editing with subtitles in English and Indonesian
  • Voiceover recording as needed
  • Color grading and audio mastering
  • Two rounds of revisions based on HRNS feedback
  • Final delivery in high-resolution formats + reels
  • Hand over raw footage and photo documentation

Consultant Qualifications

  • Proven experience in producing documentary-style films in rural or agroecology settings
  • Ability to co-develop narrative and adapt to non-scripted, field-based dynamics
  • Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia and working proficiency in English
  • Owns or can mobilize full production equipment including drone
  • Flexible and culturally sensitive approach to working with communities

 

Budget

We welcome creative, cost-effective, and impactful concepts. Final selection will be based on a comprehensive review by HRNS Indonesia, including budget feasibility and overall value.
