Consultant Palmstep – Cooperative Business Plan
Job Description
Agriterra is an international advisory organization specializing in strengthening farmer organizations and cooperatives through peer-to-peer knowledge exchange, capacity building, and business development support. In Indonesia, Agriterra assists Koperasi Produsen Karya Sawit Mandiri Jaya (KSMJ), a secondary oil palm farmers’ cooperative, is working together with Fortasbi in PALMSTEP. PALMSTEP is a part of SwitchAsia, a development project funded by European Union (EU). (see annex 1 for project info sheet).
The secondary cooperative KSMJ is the main driver of the programme which initiated the establishment process of the first CPO mill to be collectively owned by the smallholder farmers. In this process KSMJ need a support to adopt environmental, social, and economic sustainability practices in their business strategy and operations of their CPO mill and ambition to improve its position in the value chain through market linkages and policy influencing.
To make this possible KSMJ and their primary cooperative members need to develop as sustainable cooperative business plan, including standard operational procedures (SOPs). In parallel, they need business and technical advice to implement the business plan.
Agriterra is hiring a consultant team to develop a comprehensive cooperative business plan dan the SOPs to run the CPO mill, provide business advisory services to KSMJ during the establishment of the CPO mill.
Scope of Work and Key Tasks
Cooperative business plan
- Activity 2.2.2 Develop a sustainable cooperative business plan for KSMJ.
The objective of this activity is to develop a 5-year business plan for KSMJ that starts with a workshop to comprehensively address all facets of sustainability enhancement. This will include expenses for database development, training for new ICS teams, refresher training for existing ICS teams, research on seed quality, and investments in planting machinery and plantation maintenance. This finalised business plan will serve as the basis for developing an action plan in collaboration with KSMJ.
Standard operational procedures for business and CPO mill
- Activity 2.2.3 Set up KSMJ cooperative sustainable operational procedures.
The objective is to establish a system of operational procedures within KSMJ for CPO mill management and other business operations, ensuring alignment with the professional business and sustainability and traceability standards identified during the assessment process. The number of documents generated will be determined by the assessment outcomes (from Activity 2.2.1 by CPO mill vendor) and will include financial Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), procurement SOPs, goods receipt and issuance SOPs, product processing SOPs, and waste processing SOPs.
Business and technical advisory services
- Activity 2.2.4 Provide business plan implementation advice to KSMJ.
Advisory sessions with KSMJ will be held at least once every 2 months or as required. These sessions are part of business plan socialisation to all cooperative members and financial institutions who are willing to invest in the CPO mill. This activity will be part of governance training to share business prospectus to all potential stakeholders.
Job Requirements
Education & Technical Skills
- Bachelor and/or master’s degree in business administration, Agribusiness, mechanical engineering, or related field.
- Expertise in CPO mill design and establishment, cooperative companies’ legal structure and capital structure, familiar with palm oil sector.
Professional Expertise
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in developing and implementing CPO mills in Indonesia.
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in developing cooperative business plan in agricultural sector.
- Minimum 7 years’ experience and proven track record on business plan development for cooperative company—including legal and capital structuring, experience working with cooperatives or producer groups, especially medium-big sized cooperative companies (more than 2,000 members and total asset > IDR 300 billion).
- Prior experience working with palm oil businesses or cooperatives is highly desirable. Also, familiar with national and international regulation in sustainable and traceable palm oil sector is preferable.
- Familiar with palm oil: on-farm and post-harvest handling, logistics, market and value chain, and other related technologies is an advantage.
Competencies
- Strong negotiation, customer relationship, and strategic planning skills.
- Excellent facilitation, training, and report-writing capabilities.
- Fluency in English and Bahasa (local language will be adding value).
