Towards Regenerative Agriculture and Profitable Productions
Dairi District, located near Lake Toba and the Mount Sibuatan National Reserve in Northern Sumatra, is a region of rich biodiversity, high rainfall, and challenging terrain. Despite its ecological significance, the area faces increasing deforestation, soil erosion, and unsustainable farming practices, particularly in Arabica coffee cultivation. Coffee productivity is low due to poor agronomic practices, pest infestations, and limited access to improved varieties. Environmental concerns include greenhouse gas emissions from chemical overuse, irresponsible waste disposal, and infiltration into protected forests. While child labor is not prevalent, adult labor conditions are often unsafe and underpaid. There is a pressing need for regenerative agriculture, safe chemical use, and biodiversity restoration. HRNS aims to address these issues through training, awareness campaigns, and collaboration with local government extension services, despite coffee not being a priority crop in public programs.
