Senior GIS Officer

Position Overview
A GIS Senior Officer in the palm oil commodity uses advanced geographic information systems and spatial analysis to support the efficient, sustainable and compliant management of plantations. Furthermore, the objective of the GCF project is to support West Kalimantan in developing a strategic approach to commodities based on their potential, while ensuring that the landscape is managed sustainably. This role involves more than just basic mapping; it focuses on complex data analysis and strategic problem-solving related to plantation operations, environmental monitoring, and supply chain transparency.
The KPIs for this position are data collection, mapping, and spatial analysis, as well as aligning these with the government’s ESTDB requirements and the company’s traceability information.
Responsibilities
Land and Resource Management
- Creating and managing a comprehensive geodatabase of plantation assets.
- Mapping land boundaries, plant age and health, soil types, infrastructure (roads, bridges, buildings), and water resources.
- Utilize the data to optimize land use, plan planting and replanting cycles, and monitor plantation health.
Sustainability and Compliance Monitoring
- Using geospatial data to support sustainability certifications (e.g., RSPO, ISPO, RA etc).
- The officer uses remote sensing and satellite imagery to monitor for deforestation, land-use change, and fire risks.
- They also analyse spatial data to ensure the company’s operations comply with environmental and social regulations.
Data Management and Analysis
- Develops and maintains custom GIS applications, dashboards, and web portals that allow plantation managers, field staff, and executives to access and interact with spatial data easily, making informed decisions on everything from daily operations to long-term strategic planning.
- Maintain and enrich spatial databases integrating satellite imagery, field data (GPS, UAV), and socio-economic layers.
- Conduct comprehensive analyses to improve plantation productivity.
- This could include yield prediction models based on factors like terrain and soil quality, precision agriculture to optimize fertilizer application, and monitoring pest and disease outbreaks.
- Conduct remote sensing analysis for land cover classification, carbon stock estimation, and biodiversity mapping.
- Integrate GIS with participatory mapping to reflect community land use and customary rights.
Project Management and Leadership
- Plans and oversees GIS-related projects, ensuring timely delivery and data accurate.
- Manages spatial data collection, analysis, and reporting aligned with donor and program needs.
- Ensures compliance with technical standards and integrates GIS into broader project frameworks.
- Guides and mentors GIS teams, builds capacity, and fosters innovation.
- Coordinates with cross-functional teams to translate spatial data into strategic insights.
- Represents GIS capabilities in stakeholder engagements and promotes data-driven decision-making.
Stakeholder Engagement & Capacity Building
- Provide technical support and training to field teams, local governments, and community partners on GIS tools and data interpretation.
- Collaborate with multi-stakeholder platforms to inform decision-making and policy development using spatial evidence.
- Support reporting and visualization for donor-funded projects, including maps, dashboards, and spatial narratives.
Qualifications and Skills
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, or a related field.
- A minimum 7 years of progressive experience working with GIS, often in a role with increasing responsibility.
- Experience with drone mapping, GPS data collection, and integration of tabular and spatial datasets.
- Advanced knowledge of industry-standard GIS software, such as the ESRI ArcGIS suite (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise).
- Advanced proficiency in remote sensing platforms (e.g., Google Earth Engine), and spatial databases.
- Strong skills in database management, spatial analysis, and cartography.
- Programming skills (e.g., Python, SQL) and knowledge of web technologies are often highly desirable.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent communication skills to engage diverse stakeholders, from community members to policymakers.
- Strong analytical thinking and ability to translate spatial data into actionable insights. The ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and lead a team is crucial.
