1. The Background of FINCAPES Project

The Flood Impacts, Carbon Pricing, and Ecosystem Sustainability (FINCAPES) Project, funded by Global Affairs Canada and implemented by the University of Waterloo in collaboration with IPB University, supports Indonesia’s efforts to adapt to and mitigate climate change while conserving biodiversity. The 5.5-year initiative promotes gender-responsive, nature-based solutions (NbS) for peatland and mangrove restoration that also enhance sustainable livelihoods. As part of this initiative, IPB University established the Centre for Applied Research in Nature-based Solutions (I-CAN) under the Faculty of Forestry and Environment (Decree No. 185/IT3.F4/OT/2024). I-CAN serves as a hub for research, field testing, and knowledge sharing on NbS, contributing to Indonesia’s climate commitments and long-term sustainability goals.

I-CAN serves as a Centre to advance research, field testing, documentation, and dissemination of Nature-based Solutions (NbS). Its mandate is to support Indonesia’s climate commitments by promoting sustainable peatland and mangrove restoration, biodiversity conservation, and climate-resilient livelihoods. By protecting and enhancing carbon storage in peatland and mangrove ecosystems, I-CAN directly contributes to both climate adaptation and mitigation, while complementing government programs led by the Peatland and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM) and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in achieving Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

I-CAN prioritizes the implementation of Nature-based Solutions for socio-economically and environmentally sustainable multi-purpose forestry businesses through three key areas:

• Applied Research and Innovation: Conducting high-quality, innovative research to develop impactful and gender-equitable Nature-based Solutions approaches.
• Knowledge Mobilization: Supporting the translation of knowledge into actionable outcomes, ensuring effective knowledge management, and excelling in branding and communication.
• Knowledge Exchange and Capacity Building: Facilitating collaborative initiatives, building capacity, and empowering leadership across sectors to address climate challenges.

Through the FINCAPES Project, I-CAN supports small to medium-scale collaborative research involving academics, graduate students, government, NGOs, and private sector partners. These initiatives aim to generate practical solutions for sustainable conservation and restoration of peatlands, mangroves, and biodiversity, while promoting inclusive and gender-responsive approaches.

To mark IPB University’s 62nd Dies Natalis in September 2025, and to affirm I-CAN’s long-term commitment to advancing NbS, a two-day event will be held:

• Day 1: I-CAN Launch & Think Tank Forum (I-CAN Think Forum) – A high-level platform to engage government leaders, donors, academics, and practitioners in discussing enabling policies for multipurpose and social forestry in peatland and mangrove protection. The forum will address gaps such as unclear tenure rights, limited market access, and inadequate technical support, and explore policy harmonization that bridges food security and conservation objectives. By doing so, I-CAN seeks to create an enabling environment where communities are incentivized and empowered to restore ecosystems while enhancing food and income security.
• Day 2: I-CAN Synergy on Multidisciplinary Collaborative Study (I-CAN Sync) – A showcase of collaborative NbS research projects supported by I-CAN. Round 1 recipients will present progress updates, while Round 2 shortlisted teams will share research concepts and receive feedback. This session also includes a Focus Group Discussion on “Bridging Science and Society to Strengthen Knowledge Mobilization”, highlighting the importance of translating scientific innovation into practical solutions for communities and decision-makers. Both rounds of studies will showcase the mainstreaming of Gender Equality, Social Economy, and Inclusivity (GESEI), reflecting IPB’s commitment to Agromaritime 5.0 and socially responsive research for national and global impact.

By bringing together high-level officials, donors, and stakeholders, the I-CAN Launch and Think Tank Forum will position the Center as a national hub for applied research, policy dialogue, and inclusive collaboration, aligned with Indonesia’s Golden 2045 Vision (Asta Cita).

2. Objectives

To ensure its success and impact, the event will focus on achieving the following objectives:

• Officially launch I-CAN and communicate its vision, strategic plan, and programs to national and international stakeholders.
• Strengthen policy dialogue on enabling environments for multipurpose forestry and social forestry, with emphasis on mangrove and peatland protection.
• Enhance stakeholder engagement by fostering partnerships among government agencies, academia, donors, NGOs, private sector actors, and communities.
• Promote science-based, inclusive NbS that integrate climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable livelihoods.
• Disseminate NbS research under the I-CAN Sync program, highlighting the mainstreaming of Gender Equality, Social Economy, and Inclusivity (GESEI).

3.Proposal Requirements

Interested individuals or agencies must submit a proposal that includes:

• A brief statement demonstrating an understanding of the assignment.
• Portfolio of past work, preferably related to social, environmental, development or sustainability issues video production, including personnel’s CV to be involved in the production.
• Contact details of referees’ from previous projects/clients (3 referees)
• Technical proposal: detailed proposed activities aligned with the description of work
• Financial proposal: detailing all activities proposed in the technical proposal (template to be provided).

4.Budget

FINCAPES Project provides funding of up to IDR 30,000,000  for this proposal.
