Surf Conservation Manager

(Code: SURF-M)

 Konservasi Indonesia (KI) is seeking a qualified and motivated individual as Surf Conservation Manager to lead and oversee KI’s surf conservation program across the country. The goal of the program is to protect world-class waves and vital surrounding marine ecosystems. The program works with local communities, government and NGOs partners by supporting legal protection and enforcement of ecosystems around the surf breaks and empowering communities to preserve their natural environments and cultural values, and to prosper from the process.

 

The Surf Conservation Manager will lead the program, engage and enhance collaboration with partners including NGOs, government and other potential surf community partners. This position is responsible for building a strong conservation network where KI plays a central role in the network. The manager will involve in development of funding opportunities for building science and a long-term program for sustainability.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead surf conservation program which includes working with communities, partners and government to protect and important ecosystem and surf breaks
  • Collaborate with KI field teams and provide strategic, technical guidance, support and implement strategies for effective delivery.
  • Revisit the project workplan, KPIs and monitoring plan on a monthly or quarterly basis to track the progress of program implementation.
  • Support partner organizations and consultants to work together to achieve various targets of Surf Conservation Program
  • Prepare donor reports in collaboration with relevant staff, manage and monitor the program budget.
  • Provide technical inputs to KI program strategy to align with local government priorities and the needs of the ecosystems which include community and other stakeholders
  • Support the development of new proposals and concepts and proactively propose new ideas on delivery scaling up and fundraising strategies based on current field conditions and long-term vision of the seascapes.
  • Represent KI in meetings or events at provincial level and conduct regular meetings with respective government offices to update the progress and ensure alignment with government priorities.
  • Lead collaborations with other stakeholders in the field including local government, private sectors, universities, NGOs, CBOs including Indonesia surf association, etc.
  • Serve as a recognized technical resource and share technical best practices within and outside KI.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A degree in marine conservation, rural development, biodiversity conservation, natural resource management-related science.
  • Minimum 10 years of full-time work experience in relevant field, with program implementation and project management experience.
  • Experience in managing projects with multifaceted intervention, planning and support management on conservation areas management, multi-stakeholder communications, community-based conservation, project proposal preparation, supervision, evaluation within Indonesia.
  • Familiarity with the Indonesian surf and/or marine recreation and tourism sector and linkages of these sectors to conservation
  • A candidate with surfing skills is preferable.
  • Ability to deftly manage projects with strong critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills and balance attention to detail with big-picture thinking.
  • Ability to manage professional relationships and effective communication.
  • Good leadership, skill, and ability to work with a variety of skilled technical staffs, NGOs, urban and rural communities, and central, province and district government representatives.
  • Strong networking and relationship with donors and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of working time.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is performed in a typical office environment which requires field trip to KI’s sites and other location if needed.
  • Flexibility to work outside normal work hours to meet deadlines as needed.
