1. Background
IREEM is a rapidly growing think tank and NGO in the fields of energy, environment, and natural resources. It has built a strong reputation for supporting public policy, building institutional capacity, and fostering collaboration with ministries, local governments, industry, academia, and communities. Through initiatives such as energy efficiency programmes, strategic planning, and applied research, IREEM has consistently demonstrated its ability to bridge policy, research, and practice.
To further strengthen its role in supporting Indonesia’s transition toward sustainable and low-carbon energy, IREEM is expanding its research portfolio in bioenergy, with a focus on biomass and biofuels. This area is critical for advancing energy diversification, improving rural livelihoods, and supporting national commitments to the Paris Agreement, Net Zero Emissions (NZE) 2060, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
IREEM is therefore seeking a Bioenergy Researcher who will contribute to research, analysis, and knowledge generation in the field of biomass and biofuels, supporting both policy development and practical implementation.
2. Institutional Arrangement
The Bioenergy Researcher will work under the supervision and report to Energy Programme Manager. She/he will collaborate with other researchers, technical experts, and communication staff, and may engage with government, industry, and academic partners as part of research activities.
3. Scope of Work
The Bioenergy Researcher will be responsible for:
Research and Analysis
- Conduct research and analysis on bioenergy topics, including biomass, biofuels, and their role in Indonesia’s energy transition.
- Collect, process, and analyze quantitative and qualitative data to support project
- Contribute to feasibility studies, policy analyses, and technical assessments related to bioenergy.
- Support the development of models, scenarios, and case studies to evaluate bioenergy opportunities and challenges.
- Support concept note and proposal
Knowledge Generation and Dissemination
- Prepare high-quality research outputs, including technical reports, policy briefs, journal articles, and presentations.
- Contribute to workshops, seminars, and conferences by presenting findings and engaging with stakeholders.
- Support the preparation of proposals and concept notes for donor-funded bioenergy projects.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
- Assist in building partnerships with government agencies (e.g., MEMR, KLHK, Bappenas), academia, private sector, and civil society.
- Participate in stakeholder consultations and working groups related to renewable energy and bioenergy development.
- Ensure that research activities integrate Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) principles.
Other related duties may be assigned within the scope of the position.
4. Required Skills and Experience Education

- Bachelor’s degree in energy, environmental science, chemical/biomass engineering, forestry, agriculture, or a closely related field with at least 4 years of relevant experience; OR
- Master’s degree in a relevant field with at least 2 years of professional
Experience and Skills
Demonstrated experience (2+ years) in energy, bioenergy, or renewable energy research, with exposure to biomass and/or biofuels.
- Familiarity with Indonesia’s renewable energy and environmental policy
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to work with datasets and prepare evidence-based conclusions.
- Proven ability to produce technical reports, research papers, or policy
- Experience engaging with government institutions, academia, and/or private sector stakeholders is an asset.
- Strong written and oral communication skills in both Bahasa Indonesia and
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team
- Knowledge of GEDSI principles and willingness to integrate them into research
5. Contract Details
Duration: 12 months, including a 3-month probationary period to assess alignment with IREEM’s values, work culture, and performance standards.
- Contract Type: Full-time, fixed-term employment in accordance with Indonesian labour law.
