I. BACKGROUND
PHINLA (The Philippines, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka) is a Global Program to Scale-Up Multi-Sectoral Sustainable Waste Management Systems and Strengthening of Livelihoods for Poverty Affected Populations, supported by BMZ through World Vision Germany and implemented in 3 countries. In Indonesia, it is implemented by Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) and Divers Clean Action, with phase 1 done from 2020-2023, and phase 2 from 2023 to 2027.
Market analysis is needed to research the market potential through the production and commercialization of waste-to-resource products or services to sustain and elevate the waste banks and communities in PHINLA program areas. This program refers to an understanding of waste banks, also known as “bank sampah” in Indonesian, which can be found in various neighborhoods across Indonesia. At waste banks, household waste is typically separated into two main categories; organic and non-organic. Organic waste is converted into compost, while non-organic waste is further categorized into plastic, paper, bottles, and metal. (World Bank, 2013) The operation of waste banks is similar to regular commercial banks, where customers can open savings accounts at their local waste bank and periodically deposit non-organic waste, which is then weighed and assigned a monetary value based on the rates set by the waste bank manager. The proceeds from selling the waste are stored in the account and can be withdrawn. The fundamental principles of waste banks remain consistent across all provinces: collection, savings, generating income, changing behaviour, and enjoying a clean environment. (World Bank, 2013)
Essentially, each waste bank focuses on waste management with an emphasis on educating the community about waste management practices, including sorting waste into different categories such as plastic bottles, glass bottles, paper, and others. The waste collected or purchased from the community is sold by the waste bank to recycling businesses, contributing to the economic cycle of the waste bank to cover various expenses such as operational costs, maintenance, and others.
The purpose of conducting this study holds significant importance in understanding the effectiveness of recycling waste management systems, and aims to identify opportunities for collaboration in the recycling waste trading process with potential off-takers in terms of purchase prices, providing sales reports, and transporting solid waste from waste banks to the off-takers warehouse or facility. As businesses progress in various waste banks, it is essential to evaluate operational processes, challenges, and outcomes of waste banks in targeting specific markets or communities.
