COMMUNICATION AND CONTENT CREATOR
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Digital Repository of Endangered and Affected Manuscripts in Southeast Asia (DREAMSEA)
Second Phase (2025-2030)
DREAMSEA is a Programme that strives to preserve the content of manuscripts in the entire region of Southeast Asia, and to make this content fully and openly accessible online. The Programme is carried out by the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta, Indonesia, in cooperation with the Centre for the Study of Manuscripts Culture (CSMC), University of Hamburg, Germany.
Dreamsea I has been operating since December 2017, and by July 2024 had completed 55 missions, enabling the digitization of 8,570 manuscripts. A total of 571,584 images have been produced, more than doubling the planned 240,000.
The success of Dreamsea I – the diversity of languages and scripts it covers, and the number of manuscripts digitized – rests on the networks and collaborations built up over decades in Indonesia by the Indonesian Association for Nusantara Manuscripts (Masyarakat Pernaskahan Nusantara, Manassa) and the institutional support of the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (Pusat Pengkajian Islam dan Masyarakat, PPIM). Their collaboration has strengthened the capacities of local teams, developed a network of hitherto invisible manuscript owners through sustained engagement with local communities, and raised awareness of the importance of preserving such heritage.
While completing the repository with collections by communities and from areas not yet represented, Dreamsea II intends to impulse networking dynamics in partner countries, where Dreamsea I also faced challenges arising from the diversity of languages and scripts it covers. The image quality control procedure, the compilation and verification of metadata, led to significant delays in uploading the digitized manuscripts. Since the second half of 2023, decisive steps have been taken to catch up on the backlog, and a new workflow is being tested. Dreamsea II aims to build on this experience and implement an improved structure.
It aims to complete the repository – important areas and communities are not yet represented in the collections –, to render it more accessible by integrating to an existing and larger portal (Qalamos), and to bring the manuscript ecosystems in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries in closer collaborations, so that regional players can develop further initiatives after the end of the project.
