Consultation Service Training of Trainers (ToT) on pepper GAP topics

Background

aGROWforests is a partnership project supported by the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development Germany through the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The project is made of a public-private consortium including Verstegen Spices & Sauces B.V, PT Cinquer Agro Nusantara, Fairfood, Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung, and Klumbayan Gold Farm, aims to a create green and fair pepper supply chain by implementing regenerative agriculture and agroforestry with 2,300 farmers, as well as removing GHG emissions associated with pepper farming. 

In the implementation of aGROWforest project, the field officers Lampung have a fundamental role and function in guiding and supporting farmers to adopt regenerative practices which leads to increase of farmer’s productivity and income. Therefore, farmers can be more resilient and exist in the midst of disruptions that occur both in terms of climate change and economic challenges. To better understand and strengthen the field officers Lampung’ capacity, the transfer of knowledge is needed prior to their duties in the field. According to the need, the Training of Trainer (ToT) for the field officers Lampung on pepper GAP topics is going to be conducted by pepper experts to give a more detailed understanding of the pepper GAP and to guide the field officers Lampung in performing GAP practices in the field in the context of agroforestry setting.

Objectives

The specific objective of ToT on pepper GAP topics is to prepare the field officers Lampung for pepper GAP through learning and practical sessions with pepper experts. The ToT ideally covers types of pepper varieties, plant propagation and nursery management, pests and diseases identification and control measures, and harvest and post-harvest methods.

Methodology 

In the implementation of ToT on pepper GAP topics, the training method is going to focus on active, participatory and collaborative learning which will be carried out with two-way interactive presentations by discussion; question and answer, experience-based learning, practice and simulation. These strategies are expected to strengthen their understanding towards pepper GAP and upgrade the field officers’ Lampung facilitation skills as field facilitators for the local farmers.

Technically the implementation of ToT on pepper GAP will include the following activities: i) presentation and teaching, ii) discussions, iii) field exercise, iv) evaluation and feedback. 

Scope of Work

The ToR aims to provide the aGROWforests consortium with a ToT plan on pepper GAP topics particularly in the topic of types of pepper varieties, plant propagation and nursery management, pests and diseases identification and control measures, and harvest and post-harvest methods. Trainers (pepper experts) must deliver theoretical and practical knowledge on pepper GAP to prepare the field officers of aGROWforests to perform training for farmers. In addition to that, Experts are also required to support 4 times dedicated online consultation with the consortium after the ToT. Experts are expected to deliver the following topics during the ToT:

  1. Pepper varieties, plant propagation and nursery management: Different pepper varieties, seedling preparation, seedling and nursery management, planting technique
  2. Pepper management: Pepper pruning techniques, selective weeding, visual monitoring of pests and diseases, pests and disease prevention and control
  3. Soil management and plant nutrition: Soil ecology and organic matter, soil and land management, compost and compost tea production
  4. Harvest and post harvest: Selection of pepper berries, harvest handling, post-harvest handling mechanism

 Required profile

  • Education background in agriculture, horticulture, crop science, agronomy, plant pathology, sustainable agriculture, or related field. 
  • Extensive practical experience in black pepper cultivation in Lampung, preferably with a minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience in implementing GAP for black pepper especially in Indonesia.
  • Understanding of good agricultural practices specific to black pepper, such as integrated pest management, nutrient management, and post-harvest handling. 
  • In-depth knowledge of black pepper cultivation techniques, including site selection, nursery management, soil preparation, planting, pruning, and harvesting.
  • Minimum 15 years experience in providing training to field officers and farmers, and has the ability to transfer knowledge and skills to field officers, enabling them to effectively disseminate information to farmers and other stakeholders.
  • Mentoring and coaching abilities to guide and support field officers in their training delivery to farmers.
  • Hands-on experience in black pepper cultivation, with the ability to demonstrate practical techniques and best practices in the agroforestry context.
  • Experience in developing training materials, presentations, and practical demonstrations for adult learners.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, in the language(s) used by the target audience.
  • Excellent training and facilitation skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex pepper management practices within agroforestry concepts. 
  • Adaptability to different cultural contexts and the ability to tailor training materials and approaches to meet the needs of diverse audiences.

Proposal submission

  • In the Proposal Submission, Experts shall submit Proposals (technical and financial). 
  • The application could be submitted by an individual expert, but also by an organization which has the required in-house capacity.
  • The proposal shall include:
    • Description of organization.
    • Details of recent experience of similar assignments/projects and experience in Indonesia, demonstrating knowledge of the requirements and understanding of tasks outlined in the scope of work.
    • Comments or suggestions from the Experts on the ToR, and whether tools for practical session should be provided.
    • A description in which Experts would plan to execute the work, including timeframes of proposed start and completion date, approach and methodology for carrying out the work, personnel to be assigned.
    • A detailed and complete Financial proposal for the proposed work, including fees (number of days and rate per day), local insurances, taxes and VAT.
    • Please include project travel costs to Tanggamus, Lampung.

Selection criteria

Verstegen Spices & Sauces B.V and Fairfood will select the Experts based on a combination of criteria including Value for Money principles, competitive cost packages, strategies and planning, and required time to complete the assignment.
